The initial idea behind the term ‘Sketch Noting’ is, to express quite complex] information/data in as less and simple words as possible, to make topics: accessible, fun and more ‘yours’.
To achieve this goal it is necessary to know a several of techniques such as the use of icons, symbols, arrows, as well as the ability to cut a sentence down to its key information. Which means it is not necessary to use sentence parts as articles or full structure sentences. Due to the fact that this technique is not invented for the final publishing, but a quick and easy overview of a topic to maybe write later a complete academic essay about it.
Sketch noting is especially useful if you do not have a lot of time, for example in a session, lecture or reading. The notes you take do not have to be understandable for others, just for you. It is an easy way to keep on track with the content of a session. An example is the outline of the lesson in Fig. 1, it shows the outline of the CTS session from the 4th October with a minimum of words, reduced to its core information. By using arrows the time flow is easy to follow and through images and listing like writing it is easy to understand. In addition to that words like ‘and’ or ‘plus’ were substituted through a ‘+’. This last part of the noting process enables the writer to cut down the length of the document even more.
Other methods are to use colour or font size to highlight specific areas within the notes. For example can be the different use of size, emphasise the hierarchy of topics and ideas (Fig. 2).
However, it is important to not overdue one of these techniques, because as aidful they can be, as harmful can they be as well. As Paracelsus once wrote, ‘The Dose Makes the Poison‘, keeping this in mind, there is no such thing as a limit to the process of sketch noting.
